Behind the Film: Carrying Capacity with Filmmaker Ethan Goldwater

December 3, 2026

12:00 pm
to 1:00 pm (Pacific)

Virtual Location: ZOOM

Join us for a special screening of Carrying Capacity, the award-winning short documentary by filmmaker Ethan Goldwater, followed by a conversation about the film and the art of documentary filmmaking.

Carrying Capacity explores the story of Dr. Karl Deisseroth, Stanford neuroscientist, psychiatrist, author and Nobel laureate, and his patient Charles, whose experience helped inspire new thinking about the neurological basis of autism. The film offers a compelling look at the intersection of neuroscience, autism, and lived experience.

Following the screening, Ethan Goldwater will be interviewed by Devin Morrissey, an AIE Workgroup member. They will discuss Ethan’s journey as a filmmaker, how Carrying Capacity came together, the documentary-making process, and how filmmakers can bring complex scientific and human stories to life on screen.

Come watch the film, meet the filmmaker, and get a behind-the-scenes look at what it takes to turn a powerful real-life story into a documentary.

About Carrying Capacity

Carrying Capacity *inspired by Nobel laureate author, neuroscientist and psychiatrist Karl Deisseroth’s book Projections

Directed by Ethan Goldwater | Produced by Hover Pictures

The fortuitous meeting of a neurodivergent Silicon Valley computer engineer suffering from panic attacks and a talented young neuroscientist leads to a discovery that deepens our understanding of human expression across the autism spectrum.

Carrying Capacity is a short documentary that follows Dr. Karl Deisseroth and his patient Charles, a high-functioning computer engineer in Silicon Valley who sought treatment for debilitating panic attacks. In therapy, Deisseroth had this insight: after resolving Charles’s anxiety, Charles still could not maintain eye contact. This wasn’t due to nervousness, but because processing facial expressions while conversing presented too much information simultaneously. That observation helped reshape how we experimentally understand autism at the neurological level, leading to the development of the inhibition excitation balance hypothesis in the brain. The film moves between the neuroscience lab and the lived reality of autism, offering audiences a rare window into both the science and the deeply human condition.
