A Pathway Into the Television Writers’ Room: Writers’ Access Support Staff Training Program

Writing

Breaking into television writing can be difficult, and knowing how to get that first writers’ room job can be just as challenging as developing a strong script.

The Writers Guild Foundation’s Writers’ Access Support Staff Training Program offers a practical pathway for writers from historically underrepresented groups, including disabled writers. The 14-week program prepares participants for roles as writers’ assistants and script coordinators — positions that can provide valuable experience inside a professional writers’ room.

Classes are currently held online, with optional in-person networking opportunities in Los Angeles. No professional writing experience is required, although applicants should have a solid foundation in screenwriting.

Perhaps most importantly, the program doesn’t stop with training. Graduates are added to an ongoing pool of trained writers’ assistants and script coordinators that is made available to studios, networks and showrunners. WGF also maintains a Talent Portal that allows industry professionals to connect with qualified program graduates.

Applications for the 2027 program are open through September 13, 2026.
